An Invitation to Wonder

He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. Ecclesiastes 3:11

The Day of Wonder was a labour of love by Tas Baptist’s EmpowHer Team who loyally prepared the day for women from across the state. EmpowHer is a network of women growing and encouraging each other in their God-given potential.

Attendees enjoyed the company of other women, enjoyed delicious food, heard great teaching, and went away inspired and refreshed!

The day was led by EmpowHer State Leader, Jenny Baxter, who is also the cohort leader for the southern chapter of the Women Leaders Network.

“We wanted the women who joined us to leave with a greater understanding of God’s goodness, a new strength of purpose, clarity of vision and, especially, a fresh awareness of wonder,” said Jenny.

“Our hope for the day was that the many women who attended the day were inspired by the event and the speakers to reach beyond where they have gone before.”

Over 100 women attended the day!

“We are so thankful so many women embraced the invitation and joined us on the day,” she said

Attendees heard from Melissa Lipsett, CEO Baptist World Aid, as well as three Tasmanian-based women: Kristen Cox (Ulverstone), Anthea Maynard (City, Launceston) and Maggie Perkins (Citywide).

Melissa Lipsett framed her talk around the four seasons, from Winter and Spring to Summer then Autumn. She explained how Ecclesiastes 3:11, captured in the well-known song by the Byrds called, ‘Turn, Turn, Turn’, was an insight from the King Solomon in the Bible. The well-known verse speaks of the inevitability of change and how little control we have over the temporary nature of life.

All in all, the day was wonder-filled, thanks to the Empower Team: Jenny Baxter, Jenna Blackwell, Gabe Fife, Ann Herbert and Mandy Ryan. Thanks also to Stephen Baxter, Rodney Marshall and Brent McKillop who served in the background for the day.

BELOW: The Empowher Team: Gabe Fife (Ulverstone), Jenna Blackwell (City, Launceston), Jenny Baxter (Hobart), Ann Herbert (Citywide, Lenah Valley), Mandy Ryan (Riverlands, Longford). Further down are various scenes of the day.

In Sacred Presence

By EmpowHer Team Member, Ann Herbert

EmpowHer team member Ann Herbert has written a beautiful poem for you, below.
If you can, find some time to sit with these special words, and let them wash over you.
Engage and imagine. There’s rest to be found as you Wonder about the Almighty.

Read and ponder in prepartion for the Day of Wonder on 29 March 2025.

In Sacred Presence

Sometimes
eyes closed, I enter silence,
within and without.
I float in a pool
deep and still,
in depths of love
unmeasured
Living Water
buoys, holds, contains me.
Its liquid caresses, gently
Soothing
In Sacred Presence.
Ripples in a Pool.
above
blue skies and deepening space, I see,
galaxies spiralling in a universe
expanding
beneath
through mud and stone, my mind
imagines molten fluid, viscous matter
in-motion
surrounded
by soft green foliage, I’m bathed in light,
filtered and absorbed, energy
transforming
silence
now an offering.
All of me unadorned and acquiescent.
I float in a pool
merging with more and other.
In sacred presence
immersed

Ann Herbert is a member of the EmpowHer team. As a girl, she jotted down short stories and poems. When she progressed through school to university, the focus shifted to academic formats. For a while she lived overseas, at which time newsy letters to friends and family became the norm. Ann spent 22 years honing her writing-for-government skills such as policy and research papers. Post retirement, a book she read challenged her to record the moments that ‘shimmer’ in her day-to-day life. That’s when she rediscovered the joy of writing creatively about her world.

Sacred Whispers

Sacred Whispers of Holy Awe
Heartlands News

Holy Awe by EmpowHer State Leader, Jenny Baxter

Five Portraits of Holy Awe

Have you ever thought much about HOLY AWE? Why not intentionally bend your eye, mind and spirit with curiosity towards awe.

The below thoughts, images and Bible references could be prompts for your own personal reflections in the lead up to the Day of Wonder on 29 March 2025.
Journalling, writing a poem or song, going for a walk, photographing or painting a scene as prompted by the thoughts and images—you could engage any of these ways with the ideas presented.

Let me paint for you five images to capture the holy wonder of encountering the Divine—those breathtaking moments when heaven’s majesty breaks through our ordinary vision. Remember, these metaphors aren’t just poetic descriptions—they’re doorways inviting us to recognise and embrace those sacred moments when God’s glory breaks through our everyday vision.

A PRAYER AS YOU REFLECT

Creator of Wonders, help me recognise these holy moments of awe as invitations into deeper relationship with You. May I never lose my capacity for wonder, knowing that each moment of amazement draws me closer to Your heart. Amen.

First Light of Dawn

  • Psalm 19:1-2 The transition from night to day speaks of God’s glory, much like how awe transforms our perspective.
  • Lamentations 3:22-23 Each dawn is a reminder of God’s renewal, much like how awe leaves a lasting impression on our hearts.
  • Habakkuk 3:4 This verse captures the imagery of the sun breaking through darkness, much like how awe reveals God’s presence in our lives.
Holy Awe in the first light of Dawn

Ocean’s Deep Call

  • Psalm 93:4 This verse highlights the immeasurable power of God, reflected in the vastness of the sea.
  • Job 11:7-9 Just as the ocean’s depths are beyond our grasp, so is the greatness of God.
  • Psalm 8:3-4 This verse captures the humility and wonder of standing before God’s infinite greatness.
Holy Awe at ocean's deep call

Mountain’s Silent Sermon

  • Psalm 121:1-2 Mountains inspire awe, yet they point us beyond themselves to the true source of strength—God.
  • Isaiah 2:2 Just as mountains command attention, God’s presence is exalted above all things.
  • Psalm 46:10 Awe quiets our hearts, reminding us to rest in the presence of the Almighty.
Holy Awe at mountain's silent sermon

A Cathedral of Trees

  • Isaiah 55:12 Nature itself becomes a place of worship, echoing God’s glory.
  • Acts 7:48-49 Awe reminds us that God’s presence is not confined to buildings—creation itself is His temple.
  • Psalm 104:16 Even towering trees stand as a testament to the handiwork of God, drawing our eyes upward in reverence.
Holy awe in a cathedral of trees

Night Sky’s Endless Story

  • Genesis 15:5 The vastness of the stars reflects God’s promises, always greater than we can comprehend.
  • Psalm 147:4-5 Each star is known to God, just as there are endless depths to His wisdom and wonder.
  • Daniel 12:3 Stars symbolize the eternal nature of God’s truth and the infinite discoveries awaiting us in His presence.
Holy Awe at the night sky's story

Turning to Wonder

Turn, turn, turn to Wonder by Jenna Blackwell
Heartlands News

By EmpowHer team member, Jenna Blackwell

I was reading Acts chapters 3 and 4 recently. It tells the story of a middle-aged man who received a complete physical healing. It’s no surprise that the people who heard about this ended up totally amazed. They were filled with wonder (Acts 3:10).

As the story continues, the disciples asked the people, “Why does this surprise you?” (Acts 3:12). Jesus performed many miracles, and they heard of the miracles of the God of their ancestors, so why so amazed? Essentially, the point was that they shouldn’t show amazement – not because it’s not worthy of amazement and wonder, but because they should expect such amazing ways and acts from God.

What does it take?

This got me thinking, what does it take to amaze me, to make me filled with wonder? In our post-modern, post-enlightenment society, where rational thinking takes priority, how do I allow myself to turn to wonder? How do you allow yourself to turn to wonder?

The story continues in Acts 4, explaining how the traditional religious leaders of the day tried to squash Peter and John’s message of Jesus Christ. This message of Jesus’ resurrection and power was filling people with awe, wonder and excitement. You can sense the fear within the leaders, and their desire to control and minimise the stir of wonder. The religious leaders were at risk of losing control and influence. So, they tried to hush the messengers.

How often do we hush awe and wonder for fear that we won’t be in control? What about when we restrict ourselves and the expression or experience of our faith for fear of looking silly, or not knowing if God is good enough to trust? How often do we limit wonder, and our ability to turn to wonder?

Embracing Wonder

It’s risky to allow ourselves to see wonder. As well, it’s risky to allow ourselves to turn from the rational. Yes! It’s risky to take on childlike faith and potentially be seen as a fool in the eyes of others. Yet, I’m convinced that God delights in our wonder.

I wish I could tell you I have it all figured out. But I don’t. In fact, if I did, it would mean I wasn’t really open to wonder. But one way that I like to embrace wonder is to ask wonder-full questions—questions that stir wonder in another and in myself. I spend a lot of time sitting with people, and I like to wonder what God is up to in their life. To do this, I try to ask open questions that don’t have an assumed answer. These allow us both to turn to wonder and see what God might be stirring within them.

How do you allow yourself to be turning to wonder?
How could you be turning to wonder every day?

The Shifting Seasons of Life

Shifting Seasons of Life by Melissa Lipsett

The Wonder of …

Shifting Seasons of Life

Opportunities to embrace change

In this Autumn issue of Heartlands for Women, the keynote speaker for the Day of Wonder Melissa Lipsett, considers the wonder and magnitude of life’s seasons.

You can easily miss Autumn in Queensland where I live – it’s nowhere near as dramatic as further south in Australia. I imagine Tassie is glorious in Autum and can’t wait to be there in March.  A few years ago, I was in Canada during the northern hemisphere fall. It was so beautiful to see the leaves changing colour and dropping to make a glorious carpet, and I was reminded of just how much changes during Autumn.

Although it’s over 38 degrees as I write – a hot, humid summer’s day – I’m in an Autumn season.  My husband and I have five* frail and rapidly failing, parents and stepparents between us.  They’ve been healthy and able well into their eighties, but that season is turning quickly.  The changes in their health, wellbeing and circumstances have been significant and profound. In some cases, changes have happened at such lighting speed it’s been difficult to fully recognise and appreciate the implications until they literally stopped us all in our tracks.

We’ve all had to make considerable adjustments to our living arrangements. This includes my husband and myself as we moved interstate to provide assistance.   These last months have been chaotic as we dealt with one crisis after another.  Possibly, some of this chaos was caused by our failure to recognise the inevitable changes and act sooner.

Recognising Opportunities

The natural world seamlessly recognises when one season is over and it’s time for another to begin.  Let me suggest we would do well to do the same.  But just like it’s easy to miss autumn in Queensland, it’s easy to miss the opportunity to embrace change.

It’s good to see it before it either overtakes us and leaves us feeling out of control, or we find ourselves entirely stuck in a place that’s far from healthy.  Either way, it can be difficult to find the courage. Sometimes it feels more comfortable to resist and stay right where we are, no matter the consequences!

Being swept along in inevitable change is uncomfortable. But being stuck in an unhealthy place or season is dreadfully painful too.  There is likely little joy in your life if you’re swept along in change you are not prepared for. So too, there is no joy being stuck in an expired season.

the Shifting Seasons of life; He is my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust. Ps 91:12 (NIV)

My Refuge

Psalm 91:2 encourages me that, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’ So, I am trying to do two things. Anticipate and embrace changing seasons, even if they are challenging and not what I hoped for. And pray I might find the courage to trust in God. Both to hold me, and to lead me forward, in the midst of the challenge.

Day of Wonder Save the date - long
Wonder on Wonder

I am in awe of the human body and a teacher and educator of exercise and wellbeing.
God has enabled me, and you, so much freedom and power. We just need to know how to grasp and put it into practice with him in Christ Jesus.

One of God’s wonders is the AMAZING human body, you, me, us, the body of Christ.

My aim each day is to walk in faith, not by sight[1], trusting him to open the way before me, enjoying Gods precious presence. As I walk through the hours of my day, I look up and see Gods wonder in the sky, and check-in with my Father in Heaven.

 I say,

Hello there, dear Father. I love you, that you are here with me, preparing the way ahead of me. I have such PEACE knowing you have it all in your hands.
He who is in me, is greater than he who is in this world[2], your peace that transcends all human understanding guards my heart and mind[3].
I don’t have to worry or fret for even the “bumpy bits” you will smooth out. So, I know Father, it will not be beyond anything I can bear[4].

Why pray this?

Thankfulness and praise is always on my lips[5], because I know it is the easiest pathway to the throne of Jesus. Our bodies are Gods dwelling place, His temple[6].

Our spirit becomes His spirit, filled with His wonder, His possibilities, His power through us to bless others.

Our spirit becomes His spirit, filled with His wonder, His possibilities, His power through us to bless others.

What a blessing is God’s Spirit in us! Transforming not only our hearts and minds[7], but our bodies, our soul (emotions) to be whole and well.

Ask the Lord to transform your heart, your mind, and your body to be more like Christ. Wonderfully, He will, with your expectation and obedience, remove all anxiety, stress, unwellness, depression, gluttony, bad habits, negativity and replace it with His beautiful peace and joy.

How to begin each day

In the early hours of each morning, I pray, chat to the Lord, speak His word and ask for God’s full armour to protect me[8] and all those I love and care about.

I thank the Lord for the privilege and honour of having His Spirit, His wisdom, His knowledge, His understanding, His might and council. As well, the Spirit of the fear of the Lord[9] in me, so that “I can do all things in Christ who strengthens me[10] and has given me all authority over evil[11] and that no harm will come upon me[12]”.

With His supernatural provision, I teach, speak and God uses my blessings to bless others. At the end of my day, I arrive home with energy and strength that I did not have in the past, and thank and praise the Lord for His peace, joy and providence.

Try it! Receive him fully.

God is full of Awesome wonder and mystery. Our Jehovah, His shalom.

During the Day of Wonder on Saturday 29 March 2025, Mandy will lead everyone in a short Pilates routine as we all become mindful of the wonder of our bodies.

Wonder on Wonder - A visit to Antarctica! By Ann Herbert

By
Ann Herbert. Ann and her husband Dale recently returned from a once-in-a-lifetime trip to the Antarctic.

Day of Wonder Save the date - long
Wonder on Wonder

Have you ever been in a place where the moments are full of wonder? I recently visited the Falklands, South Georgia, and Antarctica. Each day, I woke asking myself what I would experience next. Each night, I went to bed with the word, ‘WOW!’ on my lips: Wonder-On-Wonder!

I asked myself, “Can this keep happening?” I look back on my holiday and know the answer is, “Yes!” As I embraced the awe seen in the ocean, the wildlife, and the landscapes along my journey, my spirits lifted. My soul sang. Welling up from deep within me, I encountered pure joy and great contentment.

What is Wonder?

Wonder is an appreciation of a moment, event, or action that stops me in my tracks. That causes me to notice and attend to something marvellous and other than myself. Although it is generated by something or someone outside of me, it connects deeply, personally, and intimately with who I am – spiritually, mentally, and physically.

It stirs within me a sense of being in the right place at the right time doing the right thing. I experience a sense of well-being that stirs my spirit, infuses my psyche, fills my soul, and triggers the release of hormones that physically relax me and ease my stress.

Wonder lifts me into a place of worship and reverence for my Creator God.

Can you take a moment today to experience W-O-N-D-E-R?
