Remembering Bill Magor

Recently, family, friends, and members of the Baptist community gathered to give thanks for the life of Rev. Bill Magor, whose faithful ministry touched countless lives across Tasmania and beyond.

Bill’s journey of faith began in South Australia, where he first sensed God’s call to Christian service as a young man. After serving with Scripture Union for eleven years, he entered pastoral ministry, eventually answering God’s call to Tasmania in 1985. Over the next four decades, Bill served Baptist churches with quiet faithfulness and a genuine pastor’s heart. He ministered at Newstead Baptist Church, Memorial Baptist Church (now Gateway Baptist Church), and later in Devonport as Associate Pastor at Lifeway Baptist Church. He also served for twelve years as chaplain at Karingal Home and continued preaching regularly at Sassafras Baptist Church for many years after his formal retirement.

Bill was passionate about helping people grow in Christ. Whether preaching, providing pastoral care, establishing home Bible study groups, or simply encouraging others, he modelled humble, consistent discipleship. His service also extended beyond the local church through leadership with Scripture Union and the Baptist Union’s Pastoral Committee.

Those who knew Bill remember not only his love for God’s Word, but also his gentle spirit, thoughtful encouragement, and deep love for people. Above all, his life pointed others to Jesus.

As we give thanks for Bill’s faithful witness, we also rejoice in the hope that sustained him throughout his life—that one day he would hear the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Please continue to pray for Judy and the entire Magor family as they grieve with the sure hope of the resurrection.
