Farewell Siebrand Petrusma

On 1 June 2026, Missionary and longtime member of Hobart Baptist church, Siebrand Petrusma went home to be with his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, at the age of 87.

Recently, family and friends gathered at Hobart Baptist Church for a memorial service celebrating a life marked by deep faith, humble service, and an enduring commitment to God’s kingdom. The church was filled to overflowing as people came to honour a man who had touched so many lives. Born in Haren, the Netherlands, on 1 April 1939, Siebrand was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose family brought him immense joy throughout his life.

Much of the service reflected the things that mattered most to Siebrand. He was involved in missionary work among the people of Papua New Guinea, served faithfully in the retail community, and led with integrity as CEO of the Tasmanian Society for the Blind and Deaf and the Royal Guide Dogs for the Blind Association of Tasmania. Through his leadership, these organisations were strengthened and equipped to continue serving those who depended upon them. He also played a significant role with Bible Society Australia, helping make the Scriptures accessible to people both in Australia and around the world, and served as a Director of Scripture Union and COTA.

Music was another passion. He became a Life Member of the Hobart Eisteddfod Society and is also remembered for his faithful service at Hobart Baptist Church. As a gifted self-taught pipe organist, he enriched the worship life of the congregation for more than 52 years, accompanying countless services and special occasions. He also shared his leadership and financial gifts through his service as Treasurer, a member of the Financial Committee, and as a Deacon.

A reading from John 10, a passage especially meaningful to Siebrand, reminded those gathered of the faith that shaped his life: “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. While there was sadness in saying goodbye, there was also deep gratitude for a life well lived and confidence in the hope he held so firmly. We give thanks for Siebrand’s legacy of faith, service, generosity, and devotion to Christ, which will continue to inspire all who knew him.
