Understanding the Baptist Movement
Study Intensive for Pastors and Others
WHEN: 10am-3pm on Saturday 22 May, 2021
WHERE: Riverlands, Longford
READING: Challenge to Change, A Radical Agenda for Baptists, Nigel Wright, Kingsway Publication, 1991
REGISTRATIONS: Jeff McKinnon, 0403 310 501
A study intensive will operate again in Tasmania in 2021 for anyone wanting to better understand the principles that lie behind the four hundred years old Baptist movement. We will explore together both Baptist history and Baptist principles - always applying the wisdom of the past to the realities of the present in a post-denominational era.
Local church leaders will find this to be immediately relevant to their church. It is deliberately shaped to be practical and engaging. Those not seeking pastor registration can choose which components of the intensive they wish to pursue.
The intensive is a requirement for all APL and RPL pastors who have not previously studied Baptist Principles formally. For those seeking pastoral registration all components must be engaged.
Reflecting on this study intensive, Matt Garvin (pictured), pastor of Citywide Baptist Church, said,
"As someone coming into leadership in the Baptist church for the first time a few years ago I found the Understanding the Baptist Movement study intensive invaluable. There are unique treasures in the way the Baptist movement in Australia and Tasmania have been shaped that cannot be lost, and there are also things that must change if we are to find our way forward. This course helped identify both and is essential for anyone wanting to be part of the conversation about the future of the Baptist church generally, or the future of specific Baptist congregations in Tasmania."
The study intensive consists of background reading, a one-day workshop at Riverlands, Longford and, only for those seeking registration, a 500 word mini-essay. The reading is Nigel Wright, Challenge to Change, A Radical Agenda for Baptists, Kingsway Publication, 1991 (copies are available on loan or electronically) and about 30 pages of course notes.
