150 Year Celebrations at Gateway!

Gateway Baptist Church in Launceston has celebrated a remarkable milestone, marking 150 years of faithful ministry in the heart of the city.

The church’s story began in 1875 through the vision of merchant and evangelist Henry Reed. Legend has it that while Reed’s coachman was delivering a horse for treatment, he struck up a conversation with local publican Parr, who mentioned his building was for sale. Reed responded, “I really want to build a church somewhere here,” and the journey of Gateway Baptist Church began.

From its humble beginnings meeting in a skittle alley behind the property, the congregation quickly grew and soon constructed the church building that continues to serve the city today. Over the past century and a half, thousands have worshipped within its walls, and the church has remained committed to proclaiming the gospel and serving both its local community and the wider world.

Long-time member Lee Campbell reflected, “There have been times when it’s been up and down, but it keeps going.” That perseverance has been matched by a heart for mission, supporting ministry in Haiti, India, and Thailand alongside ongoing outreach across Launceston.

The anniversary celebrations included music, historical displays, guided tours, and a thanksgiving service.
